The Spanish Programme of the University of Canterbury is delighted to invite all the schools in New Zealand that teach Spanish to participate in the Karaoke competition Cantemos juntos / Kia waiata tahi tātou and sing Bailan (Kotahitanga) by Oriana Setz featuring Jake Kīanõ Skinner (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1f85VneGMs), a beautiful song with lyrics in Spanish and Te reo Mãori that celebrates diversity and togetherness, and honours the cultural exchange between Mãori culture of Aotearoa New Zealand and Hispanic people and cultures.

To participate, the Spanish teachers and students of your school will have to film their performance and send their videos to us. We will create a private YouTube playlist with these videos and which only the judges and people who have the link (all participants, of course) will be able to access. We will not make any video public unless we have a written authorization from you!

To practice and as the backing track for your video, you can use the Karaoke versions of the song that can be found on these links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lvIulsae0U (with voice over) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfR8QXuqiM0 (instrumental). You may want to practice the song with the first version where you can hear the lyrics, and then film your performance with the second version where you can only hear the music. It is really up to you! Please feel free to add your own flavour and style to your performance! And remember that it is not just about singing in tune, but also about the energy, emotion, enthusiasm and creative elements which play an important role when performing!

There will be great prizes for the schools that submit the best performances. Our 'grand jury' will be composed of Clara Gómez-Jimeno from the Embassy of Spain in New Zealand, Gloria Vázquez from STANZA (Spanish Teachers' Association of New Zealand Aotearoa), Kara Morrison from Tui Tuia I Learning Circle, and Rahera Cowie from the Faculty of Education of the University of Canterbury.

Thank you very much for your wonderful support promoting the Spanish language and the intercultural/bicultural communication in Aotearoa New Zealand. We are sure that you and your students will love this year's Karaoke competition! For any enquiries and comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Submissions and Deadline:

The deadline for sending your video (and the logo of your school, please) is Friday 4 August. You can use www.wetransfer.com or another cloud-sharing option such as Google Drive to share your video with us (victoria.escaip@canterbury.ac.nz) . You will receive a message from us acknowledging the reception of your video within five working days. If you do not receive this message, please contact us.
